Known

Both times we’ve welcomed a newborn into our lives, I’ve noticed that those around are quick to surround us with support and well wishes. I’ve also noticed a genuine curiosity from all quarters; people armed with questions about all sorts of things from the birth experience, to my personal favourite: how much the baby weighs.

In almost no other situation in life is it ok to ask about someone’s weight in casual conversation, but for some reason, with babies, that’s what people know to ask. Though I can’t blame them because – well, there’s not really a whole lot else TO know about a new baby. So much is a mystery, locked away to be discovered at some near or distant point in future when the little stranger grows up.

But no one is a stranger to our heavenly father. The Psalmist writes,

“You created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

Your works are wonderful, I know that full well”.

Every single one of us is known and sustained day by day, by the God who has seen the end from the beginning. He knows our good days, and our bad; our successes, and our frailty. And before any of us knew him, he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for us. Who knows what will lie ahead in coming days for the little baby that rests in my arms? God knows. And there is no greater comfort.
